Aging Individuals: The Health Benefits of Consuming Cheese

A team of scientists is examining massive genetic datasets utilizing a particular approach. Their primary objective is to pinpoint factors that boost people's health and happiness as they age. In their extensive study, these scientists, based in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, stumbled upon cheese.

According to their findings from an analysis of data from millions of Europeans, individuals who opt to eat cheese might have better health and happiness in their golden years compared to those who don't. The researchers applied an analytical technique called Mendelian Randomization, which enables researchers to identify variables influencing human genes and causing specific health outcomes.

It was found that optimal psychological well-being, assessed using life satisfaction, mood, neuroticism, and depressive symptoms, contributes positively to longevity and overall health. The authors of the study, published in the journal "Nature Human Behavior", concluded that improving mental well-being is a viable approach to promoting healthy aging, regardless of socioeconomic status.

To gain a clearer understanding, the researchers looked at 33 individuals from all datasets, focusing on factors contributing to their mental well-being and healthy aging. These factors included lifestyle choices like smoking or watching TV, behaviors such as medication use, diseases like diabetes, and, of course, cheese. From the 33 subjects, those who reported eating cheese and fruit more frequently showed higher levels of psychological well-being. Furthermore, cheese consumption seemed to have a favorable effect of 3.67% on self-assessed health and life expectancy. Fruit consumption also seemed to have a positive impact on healthy aging, with an effect of 1.96%.

Televisión is the most negative factor

On the flip side, the researchers argue that extended television viewing has a negative impact. Based on the findings, this amounts to a negative impact of 7.39% and is, therefore, the most significant negative factor. Even prolonged television viewing is surpassed by smoking, which carries a negative impact of 4.56%.

The reasons behind cheese consumption's positive effects on well-being in old age remain unclear. Previous studies have suggested that moderate consumption of dairy products might help lower cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. Other research recommends that cheese triggers dopamine production in the brain, leading to feelings of happiness. As for healthy aging, this requires further investigation.
