After unsuccessful auction: Queen's letter sold

After no one placed a bid for the rare document at an auction at the end of October, a personal letter from the late British Queen Elizabeth II has been sold after all. A few days after the auction, a buyer was found for the letter from 1964, a spokeswoman for the Stuttgart auction house Eppli told the German Press Agency on Tuesday. The "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" had previously reported on this.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. At the auction at the end of October, no one had wanted to bid the required 6,200 euros starting bid for the double-sided and well-preserved letter. A spokeswoman for the auction house had explained in advance that the letter had been consigned by a private individual. According to the auction house, the monarch (1926-2022) writes about her youngest son Edward, now Duke of Edinburgh, in the personal and handwritten letter from August 1964.

The auction house already auctioned a handwritten letter from the British Queen last year. The winning bid was won by a woman from another European country, who bought it for more than 8,000 euros.

Despite the unsuccessful auction, the noble letter from Queen Elizabeth II found a buyer, serving as the head of state's headline-making artifact in a private collection. The buyer chose anonymity in their acquisition, keeping the purchase price confidential.
