- After the explosion in front of the children's room window, 43-year-old confessed
After the explosion of an explosive device in front of a child's bedroom window in Langenhagen near Hannover, a 43-year-old woman confessed to the crime at the start of the trial. She claimed that she believed the resident of the apartment was in a relationship with her former partner, stating that she felt disappointed and hurt in her pride. Additionally, she was intoxicated at the time. The defendant is accused of throwing the explosive device onto the balcony of the apartment on Christmas Eve last year.
According to the prosecution, the Polish woman recklessly endangered human lives. The device exploded on the windowsill in front of the room of a three-year-old girl. The sleeping child was thrown out of her bed by the blast wave but remained physically unharmed. The mother suffered a shock. Windows and the child's room were destroyed, and the building was significantly damaged.
The woman is charged with causing an explosion, violating the Explosives Act, bodily harm, and property damage. According to a court spokesman, the penalty for these crimes ranges from one to 15 years, but the Amtsgericht can only impose sentences of up to four years.
The defendant stated that she felt overwhelmed and suffered from depression. She claimed that she had been drinking liqueur with her son's friend and eventually became so intoxicated that she drove to the apartment of her perceived rival and threw the device onto the balcony: "It was a snap decision." However, she insisted: "I didn't want to hurt anyone." She claimed she wanted to give her former partner a "farewell gift."
The 40-year-old resident of the damaged apartment testified that she had received threats from the defendant, despite not being involved with the defendant's ex-partner at the time.
In March 2023, a small device had already been thrown against her window, causing minor damage. On Christmas Eve 2023, she heard a loud bang, the balcony door was destroyed, and her daughter's room was full of shards - the three-year-old was thrown out of her bed. "I thought my child was dead." The girl was initially unresponsive but unharmed.
Three trial days have been scheduled for the process. The verdict could be pronounced according to this plan on August 26.
On Christmas Eve last year, the explosive device was actually thrown onto the balcony of the apartment, causing significant damage. Despite her claims, the defendant's actions on Christmas Eve put numerous lives at risk, including that of a three-year-old girl who was in the room at the time.
