- After the airport's sticker action, the investigation continues.
Investigations continue a week after the glue action at Frankfurt Airport. The proceedings against eight suspects are ongoing for the suspected offenses of coercion, trespassing, and malicious damage to property, a spokesperson for the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office said. They declined to provide further details.
The climate protesters had glued themselves to the runways last Thursday, temporarily halting operations at Germany's largest airport during the peak holiday season. More than 250 flights had to be cancelled.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa reiterated that it would seek compensation from the perpetrators for the damage caused. "Even if the outcome is uncertain, we will pursue our claims consistently," said Michael Niggemann, Board Member for Personnel and Legal Affairs. He could not yet provide details on the extent of the damage. Lufthansa had already attempted to recover damages through legal means in several cases from 2022. These proceedings are still ongoing.
The investigation, conducted in conjunction with the Federal Police and local authorities, is ongoing, said Fraport spokesperson Christian Engel. "This is not a matter of overnight," he said, adding, "We take this very seriously." Legal action was taken and a report was filed immediately after the incident. A spokesperson for the Federal Police had noted that all regulations in Frankfurt had been adhered to.
The eight suspects had gained access to the fenced-off area early in the morning. While one person remained at the fence, seven individuals managed to enter the security area and glue themselves to the ends of the two central runways. The eight activists were released later the same day. According to the Frankfurt Police Headquarters, they were four men, two women, and two non-binary individuals aged between 20 and 44. None of them were registered in Hesse.
The environmental activists' actions during the demonstration at the airport resulted in the cancellation of over 250 flights. Despite being released, the eight individuals involved in the glue action are still facing charges for coercion, trespassing, and damaging property.
