After shock call: Hand over cash and jewelry to fraudsters
An 89-year-old woman has handed over her entire fortune and jewelry to a fraudster in Dachau after receiving a shock call. On Wednesday, the woman received a call from someone claiming to be her daughter-in-law, police said on Thursday. The caller said that she had caused an accident and could only escape a prison sentence by paying cash. The 89-year-old then withdrew all her assets, took her jewelry and gave both to an unknown male person. A day later, she confided in her son, who called the police.
A similar case occurred in Munich on Wednesday: A woman over 80 years old received a call, again a fraudster pretending to be her relative who had allegedly caused a fatal accident. According to the alleged relative, he would only be allowed to leave in return for a deposit of several tens of thousands of euros. A short time later, the woman therefore handed over several tens of thousands of euros in cash to an unknown collector.
In Upper Bavaria, seniors continue to be targets of such scams, as depicted by an incident where a man tricked an elderly woman into giving away her valuable jewelry and a substantial amount of money. These types of crimes involving fraudulent calls and the misuse of trust towards seniors are not uncommon.
