Fire department operation - After ship hall fire: investigators to start work
After the major fire on the premises of Lürssen-Kroger shipyard in Schacht-Audorf, firefighters intend to begin their work. However, the temperature at the fire site must first drop to an acceptable level, a police spokesperson told the German Press Agency. The exact timing for this was not clear yet. At times, temperatures of over 1000 degrees Celsius had been reported in the hall on Tuesday, according to earlier police statements.
The fire at the yard specializing in building luxury yachts on the North Sea Canal broke out on Tuesday morning and caused extensive damage. A ship hall on the yard near the Rader Hochbrücke was on fire, where a yacht is located, as Kreisfeuerwehrsprecher Daniel Passig stated. The extent of the damage or cause of the fire was initially unknown. However, the damage was expected to be significant and in the multiple millions range.
Smoke column kilometers long
Due to the strong smoke development, the population in the vicinity was asked to close windows and doors as well as shut down ventilation and air conditioning systems. The dense black smoke clouds were partially kilometers long. The burning hall and nearby houses were partially enveloped in the smoke clouds.
The yard workers had to leave the premises already in the morning. "All necessary evacuation measures were immediately initiated", a yard spokesperson stated on Tuesday. He did not comment on the cause of the fire or the ship in the shipbuilding hall.
The Werft Lürssen has its headquarters in Bremen. According to company statements, medium-sized and large yachts from 55 to 110 meters in length are built at the Schacht-Audorf location, as well as refits and maintenance work on smaller ships. Even larger yachts have had their launch here.
