After riots: police union calls for action
The police union (GdP) in Hesse has called on the state to take action following the serious rioting by violent soccer ultras at the Bundesliga match between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart (1:2). The state interior ministers and Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) are called upon to quickly and intensively discuss this increasing violence, according to the GdP statement. "Anyone who accepts legal interests such as physical integrity, life, limb and health of others through the use of brutal violence in soccer stadiums must be consistently and permanently excluded from our soccer arenas," explained GdP boss Jens Mohrherr.
Hesse's GdP also called for penalties to be implemented consistently. If so-called violent sports offenders are identified, tangible consequences must follow. "Stadium bans and their consistent enforcement must not become a taboo subject", they said.
According to the Frankfurt police, who used pepper spray and batons, among other things, "a mid-double-digit number of officers were injured as a result of the riots by the perpetrators of violence". The GdP put the number at more than 40. "In addition, a still unknown number of stewards, rescue workers and stadium visitors also suffered injuries", the police announced.
According to the police, the officers were attacked with targeted throws of bottles, pyrotechnics and heavy iron bars. The police arrested several suspects during the attacks. In addition, a special commission was set up to "comprehensively and promptly investigate" the events. Among other things, "serious breach of the peace and assault on law enforcement officers" are being investigated.
The violent soccer ultras' actions during the Bundesliga match between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart, leading to injuries for numerous officers and stadium visitors, have prompted Bundesliga-related discussions about crime. To address this issue, GdP is advocating for consistent penalties for identified violent sports offenders.
