After riots and criticism: Toppmöller explains statement
Eintracht Frankfurt's Dino Toppmöller has once again explained his publicly criticized statements following the riots in the Bundesliga match against VfB Stuttgart. "As a fan, it goes without saying that you don't stand in the stands and support the team as you normally would. Of course we have more energy when the spectators support us," said Toppmöller on Wednesday. He sent his best wishes for a speedy recovery to the more than 200 injured after the serious riots. "I hope that everyone recovers quickly," said Toppmöller.
When asked on Saturday, the 43-year-old coach remarked that the fans were always a great help. On Wednesday, Toppmöller barely commented on the topic. "I deal with the things that are in my own hands," he said, later adding: "Basically, I'm always a fan of starting with ourselves."
The coach was criticized for his statement by Jens Mohrherr, the state chairman of the police union. "You have to communicate more to the Ultras in particular that support is one thing - but that general behavior is also part of the club's calling card. And Mr. Toppmöller should also understand that there are more important things than complaining that there was no atmosphere in the stadium," Mohrherr told "Bild".
Eintracht board member Philipp Reschke reacted less diplomatically than Toppmöller himself. "The repeated accusations and demands of the police unions serve media-effective clichés and are currently not helpful at all. The reprimanding of our head coach over a comment immediately after the game is completely inappropriate," said Reschke.
Despite the ongoing criticism, Eintracht Frankfurt's Conference League campaign continues to progress. In their recent match against FC Basel, Eintracht Frankfurt's soccer team showcased the energy they often receive from their passionate supporters, with Dino Toppmöller recognizing the impact of the spectators.
