Penal system - After prisoner's escape: further details known
Further details have emerged following the escape of a prisoner during a visit to the doctor outside Mannheim prison. The man had used a visit to the doctor at the clinic in the neighboring city of Ludwigshafen to escape on Thursday. There was no trace of him on Saturday, nor of another prisoner from Bruchsal Prison who had already escaped at the end of October during a so-called execution at a quarry pond in Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The prisoner from Mannheim, who is still on the run, was accompanied by two staff members to his appointment with an orthodontist, the Stuttgart Ministry of Justice announced on Saturday. When he was brought back to the transport vehicle after his treatment, he was handcuffed and handcuffed to a staff member. "In the open door of the vehicle, the shackles on the staff member were released so that the prisoner could get into the vehicle," the ministry continued.
At this moment, the 25-year-old inmate broke free and at the same time a buddy on a scooter approached from behind - probably unrecognizable. "The officer to whom the prisoner was handcuffed immediately followed the fleeing prisoner when the driver of the scooter pointed a firearm at the officer at close range," said a ministry spokeswoman. While the prisoner, who was still handcuffed, jumped onto the back seat of the scooter and warned the officer to come closer, the scooter driver fired into the air. There was still no trace of either man on Saturday.
The man was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Mannheim Regional Court in October 2022 for particularly serious robbery and extortion.
This is the second escape of a prisoner from Baden-Württemberg in Rhineland-Palatinate in just a few weeks. A prisoner at Bruchsal Prison had escaped on October 30 during a guarded excursion to a quarry pond in Germersheim, using a tool to break his shackle. In 2012, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Karlsruhe district court for strangling a man. The man is also still on the run.
The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice has since issued a decree tightening the requirements for execution.
