- After Olympic silver: Mihambo in a wheelchair, crying
Olympia silver medalist Malaika Mihambo was pushed through the Stade de France's interior by helpers in a wheelchair after the long jump final. Following an intense competition, the 30-year-old European champion was seen crying with her coach Ulli Knapp and appearing to be in discomfort, clutching her neck.
After winning the European title two months ago, Mihambo's progress was hindered by a COVID-19 infection. She still managed to regain her form in time and secured silver with a jump of 6.98 meters, behind Tara Davis-Woodhall from the USA (7.10 meters).
"It's tough to watch. It's overwhelming for her body. Her spirit is always fresh, but her body just can't keep up," said ARD expert Frank Busemann. Mihambo had not yet made any statements about the competition or her reaction.
Initially, the silver medalist was seen celebrating with the German flag and her medal. "They're all thoroughbred professionals. You'd have to carry them out with their heads under their arms. They want to perform," Busemann added.
Despite her COVID-19 recovery, Malaika Mihambo needed assistance in a wheelchair during the medal ceremony due to exhaustion. Even in the wheelchair, her spirit remained high as she waved to the crowd and celebrated her silver medal.
