- After jumping from the tenth floor, death from internal injuries.
After a dive from the 10-meter board, a young man in Bremen likely died from internal injuries. The 23-year-old hit the water chest-first, sustaining fatal injuries, according to a police spokesman. "It was a terrible accident," he said. The case is now closed.
Bremen's pool attendants observed the incident on Monday afternoon. The man's dive was poor, and he hit the water awkwardly, a spokesperson said. "We believe he fell unluckily." He resurfaced briefly but made uncertain swimming movements, his condition visibly deteriorating. Lifeguards reacted immediately, pulling him from the water, but their first aid efforts were unsuccessful.
Such an incident has never occurred in Bremen before. "People often hit the water poorly, but they usually just have a red bottom, a bruise, or an ear injury," the spokesperson said. This was far worse. "It was simply a very, very tragic accident." A crisis intervention team is supporting staff, and the 10-meter board remains closed out of respect. "We can't just carry on."
Specially trained staff always supervise the diving towers, the spokesperson emphasized. They ensure children don't fall into the water and only experienced swimmers dive. Those who've dived from the three, five, and seven-and-a-half-meter boards can attempt the 10-meter. "You should work your way up to the 10-meter dive to assess the jump," she said. At that height, divers reach speeds of about 50 kilometers per hour and should aim for minimal contact with the water's surface. "The smaller the impact area, the less severe the impact."
The outdoor swimming pool in Bremen will undergo an additional safety review following the tragic accident. Despite the strict safety measures, such an incident hasn't occurred in the outdoor swimming pool before.
