After Fischer's departure: Union's assistant coach Bönig asks for time out
A few days after parting ways with coach Urs Fischer, 1. FC Union Berlin will also have to plan without assistant coach Sebastian Bönig for the time being. The 42-year-old, who has spent the last five years on the Köpenick bench with Fischer and other assistant coach Markus Hoffmann, has asked for time off for personal reasons, as the Bundesliga club announced on Monday.
According to information from the "Bild" newspaper, Bönig is said to be thinking about no longer being part of the professional coaching staff in the future. The former U19 coach Marco Grote and assistant Marie-Louise Eta took over after Fischer's departure.
Bönig is a true Union veteran. After his playing days, the former Iron captain coached the U19 team from 2012. First as co-coach, later as head coach. Born in Bavaria, he is held in high regard at the club and is said to have a permanent contract.
Despite Bönig's potential departure from the professional coaching staff, 1st FC Union Berlin continues to rely on his expertise in their U19 team. The Bundesliga club has temporarily lost Bönig due to personal reasons, after serving as assistant coach alongside Urs Fischer for five years.
