- After climate protest, Nuremberg Airport reopens
After the protest action by the group "Last Generation", flight operations at Nuremberg Airport have resumed. The first flight took off at 7:10 AM, a spokesperson for the airport told dpa. The disruption lasted approximately an hour, affecting a total of eight flights.
Two climate activists gained access to the runway of the airport early in the morning, according to police reports. Flight operations were subsequently suspended indefinitely. A dpa reporter on the scene reported a hole in the fence in the southern area of the runway, near which two bolt cutters were found.
Actions nationwide
Last Generation reported several actions at airports nationwide. In pairs, activists in orange safety vests gained access to Berlin-Brandenburg, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Cologne-Bonn airports. They peacefully demonstrated their resistance by displaying banners with the slogans "Oil kills" and "Sign the treaty", the organization reported. The runways were not entered.
"Ultimately, it's the passengers who suffer," said the spokesperson at Nuremberg Airport. One flight was canceled due to the action, six flights were delayed, and one flight was reportedly rerouted to Prague.
In response to similar actions at other airports across the country, activists from Last Generation also disrupted flights in Bavaria's Nuremberg Airport, causing one cancellation and several delays. The protestors, identified as members of Last Generation, also disrupted operations at Bavaria's Stuttgart Airport, mirroring their actions in Nuremberg.
