After bird flu cases in MV Pedigree poultry show in Grimmen
Following the latest evidence of bird flu, breeders have come together in Grimmen for a pedigree poultry show which, according to the organizers, is one of the largest in the country. Around 680 birds of various species and breeds will be on display until Sunday. On Saturday, show director Robin Kagels told the German Press Agency that birds had been vet-checked on entry. The district veterinary office had also carried out an inspection. There were no abnormalities.
Last week, bird flu infections became known in a turkey fattening farm in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Around 25,000 animals had to be killed. The Minister of Agriculture in Schwerin, Till Backhaus (SPD), warned of further cases and urged owners to be vigilant.
A year ago, the regional show of pedigree poultry breeders in Demmin had developed into a super-spreader event. According to the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, there were 80 secondary outbreaks at the time due to the spread via pedigree poultry shows.
According to Kagels, there will be no state poultry show this year. He referred to safety measures for the show in Grimmen. Animals have to be quarantined for around ten days before they are allowed to take part in a show. "This means that you must not have been to any other poultry show with your animals for ten days before a poultry show." The ten days correspond to the incubation period, during which it becomes clear whether animals are infected.
Despite the ongoing concerns about bird flu and its impact on animal health, the large pedigree poultry show in Grimmen continues, displaying various animal species and breeds until Sunday. To ensure the animals' health, strict vet checks and quarantine procedures have been implemented before allowing them to participate in the exhibitions.
