Bundesliga - After away win: Heidenheim coach warns against euphoria

After 1. FC Heidenheim's liberating first away win in the Bundesliga, coach Frank Schmidt briefly embraced his players before immediately warning them to keep their feet on the ground. "We mustn't get euphoric now. The motto is: now we've won away from home and we'll continue to pick up points at home like we did last time," said Schmidt after the 1:0 (1:0) win at penultimate-placed FSV Mainz 05.

With 17 points, the plucky newcomers have moved up to twelfth in the table ahead of their final game of the year against SC Freiburg next Wednesday and are out of the relegation zone in the Bundesliga for the time being. However, Schmidt warned that they should not rest on their laurels and demanded: "I want to see us roll up our sleeves once again and everyone is ready to lead the way with an outstanding attitude."

The 49-year-old is confident that his team will once again give their all in the clash with the Europa League participants. "The game on Wednesday is in our heads. A sense of achievement like today helps. You can't replace them," said Schmidt on Saturday. It was "outstanding and important for us to have picked up three points away from home for the first time in the Bundesliga ".

However, Schmidt was not unaware of his charges' weaknesses going forward. "We should have done much better in attack. We lost the ball too often," he complained. However, he did not want to be too harsh on the team. "You just have to win these games and that's what we did," said Schmidt. "That's why you don't have to put your finger in the wound, I do that often enough."
