Regional court - After arson attack on book box: perpetrator to be sent to psychiatric ward
The 63-year-old man who allegedly set fire to a box of books on the subject of National Socialism in Berlin is to be permanently admitted to a psychiatric hospital due to severe mental illness. This was requested by the public prosecutor's office at the regional court, as announced on Wednesday. The illness impaired the man's capacity to be guilty.
On August 12, the man is said to have set fire to the telephone booth at Grunewald station, which had been converted into a book box. He is said to have left behind an anti-Semitic letter denying the Holocaust. On the same day, he is said to have set fire to the memorial to homosexuals persecuted under National Socialism in Tiergarten. On August 14, the 63-year-old allegedly carried out an arson attack on an association of lesbian women in Neukölln and a few days earlier had also posted anti-Muslim notes on a mosque and other institutions.
The man was arrested and confessed to the acts. According to the public prosecutor's office, a total of over 30 cases of statements with homophobic or hateful content have come to light.
