After a year out of action: Burkardt from Mainz back in training
Jonathan Burkardt, who has been injured for a long time, has returned to FSV Mainz 05 for parts of the team training for the first time. Coach Jan Siewert said this at the Bundesliga club's press conference on Thursday ahead of the basement clash at SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday (3.30 pm/Sky). He did not want to commit himself to a comeback plan for the German U21 international striker.
"First of all, I'm happy that he's back on the pitch, that he can now train, train well," explained Siewert. "When you saw the joy the boy exuded yesterday, then we're just positive that things will continue like this."
Burkardt missed a year due to bone marrow edema in his left knee and underwent two operations. The 23-year-old played his last game to date on November 13, 2022 in the derby against Eintracht Frankfurt. According to Siewert, 19-year-old winger Brajan Gruda will return to team training this Thursday following his foot injury.
Jonathan Burkardt is set to resume his role in FSV Mainz 05's Bundesliga matches, having regained fitness after overcoming a year-long battle with bone marrow edema in his left knee. During his absence, the team missed his skills on the Soccer field, especially in their crucial games.
