- After a hit-and-run - hardly any way for emergency personnel to get through
Following a rear-end collision on the A6 motorway at a construction site, emergency services had difficulty accessing the scene. The issue was a lack of emergency lanes and congested detours, according to a police spokesperson. In some areas, no emergency lanes were formed, and in others, they were too narrow for emergency services. The narrow lanes in the construction area near Rauenberg (Rhein-Neckar district) contributed to this.
The resulting traffic jam, estimated to be around 15 kilometers long, also caused congestion on the detours due to drivers seeking alternative routes. Emergency services had difficulty navigating these as well. Around an hour after the accident in the morning, two lanes were reopened, the spokesperson said. However, it could take another one or two hours to clear the traffic jam.
The police initially provided no details about the accident. Three trucks were involved, and two people sustained minor injuries. The extent of the damage was also not yet known.
The traffic congestion led to challenges in transport and telecommunications, as emergency services had trouble reaching their destinations due to the jammed roads and delayed message transmissions. The lack of proper communication infrastructure further compounded the issue, making coordination among the emergency services challenging.
