Creatures - African swine fever diagnosed in Vorpommern-Greifswald.
A pig farm in the Vorpommern-Greifswald region has been hit with an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF). The news was confirmed by the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute, as stated in Schwerin on Thursday by the Ministry of Agriculture. To handle the situation, the authorities will be working together closely between the state crisis center and the responsible district, following the awareness that arose on Wednesday. The district will announce more details at an afternoon press conference in Greifswald.
The initial samples were inspected by the State Office for Agriculture, Food Safety and Fisheries on Wednesday, leading to the confirmed suspicion of ASF. As a response, the relevant Veterinary and Food Safety Authority shut down the farm and took legal action.
Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) remarked on Wednesday evening, "We have been closely monitoring and there are no indications of an epidemic in the wild boar population. This is good news." The epidemiologists will now try to trace the source of the infection.
African swine fever is a contagious viral disease affecting pigs and wild boars that almost always ends in death and cannot be cured. There is no option to vaccinate pigs to prevent the disease. The infection can be transferred from animal to animal directly or through contaminated objects like clothing and shoes, and via feed, to other locations by humans. However, humans and other animal species are not susceptible and cannot contract the disease.
