Mettmann district - AfD local politician taken away during council meeting

An AfD local politician was taken away by the police during a council meeting in Velbert near Essen. This was confirmed by a police spokeswoman in Mettmann on Friday. He was wanted for arrest because he had not paid a fine, said a spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office in Dortmund. The "Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" had previously reported.

The AfD man is said to have driven towards an officer during a police check in Dortmund in October 2021. He was therefore charged with attempted grievous bodily harm, assault on law enforcement officers and dangerous interference with road traffic.

After he failed to appear at his court hearing, he was fined 2,700 euros. Because he did not pay the fine, an arrest warrant was finally issued against him.

Because he paid the fine at the police station on Tuesday evening, he was able to leave. It was not the AfD man's first run-in with the law. In 2022, he was given a suspended sentence for assaulting a law enforcement officer, it was reported.
