AfD in Bremen fails with objections to citizenship election

The two divided sections of the Bremen AfD, the so-called rump executive committee and the so-called emergency executive committee, as well as several candidates appealed to the election review court. However, the court did not see any electoral irregularities.

It stated that the short board had not proven that it was authorized to represent the AfD state association. The emergency board's election proposal, in turn, contained a significant electoral error because not all party members entitled to vote were aware of the general meeting to elect the list candidates.

The election review court also ruled that the election committees had been properly staffed. It was not mandatory for an AfD representative to sit on the committee. The Bremen AfD can still appeal against the decision before the State Court of Justice, the state constitutional court.

Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte's SPD emerged victorious from the election on May 14 with 29.8 percent of the vote. The CDU came second with 26.2 percent, ahead of the Greens with 11.9 percent and the Left Party with 10.9 percent.

The right-wing populist Bürger in Wut (BIW) achieved 9.4 percent. The FDP narrowly managed to re-enter the parliament with 5.1 percent. The SPD, Greens and Left Party agreed to continue their coalition under Bovenschulte.
