Parties - AfD fails with district council chairmanship in Spree-Neiße
The AfD caucus in the Spree-Neiße District Council - the strongest in the communal parliaments in Brandenburg - failed in the election for the chairperson. The District Council elected Torsten Schüler (FDP) from the Free Citizens faction with 29 votes again as chairperson in Forst (Lausitz). AfD politician Daniel Münschek, who is also a state representative, lost with 21 votes. However, he received more votes in terms of calculations than those of the AfD faction.
Schüler stated after the election: "The goal should be that we argue together here, but then find compromises in consensus." Münschek had campaigned for unity beforehand: "We must determine a common course that brings us into a safe harbor," he said. It's about a sign of fairness.
AfD caucus leader Thomas Kochan demanded the chairmanship. The other factions should "grant the chairmanship to a faction that received 38 percent of the votes," Kochan said before the press conference of the German Press Agency.
The AfD achieved 38.2 percent in the Spree-Neiße District Council election in June, the CDU 20.1 percent, and the SPD 13.0 percent. The Linke came to 6.8 percent, BVB/Free Voters were at 5.3 percent. The FDP achieved 3.3 percent, and the Greens came to 2.1 percent. In addition, there are several voter associations. The AfD grew in the district council from 13 to 19 members. The FDP and several voter associations are organized in the Free Citizens faction.
- The strongest caucus in the municipal parliaments of Brandenburg, belonging to the AfD, experienced a setback in the election for the chairperson in the Lusatian district council of Spree-Neisse.
- The County Council, in the municipality of Forst (Lausitz), re-elected Torsten Schüler from the Free Citizens faction, representing the FDP, as chairperson, with 29 votes, despite the strong presence of the AfD.
- Municipalities across Brandenburg, including those in Lusatia, are represented by various parties in their municipal parliaments, with the FDP and AfD both holding significant positions.
- The upcoming debates in the Spree-Neiße District Council parliament, under the leadership of FDP's Torsten Schüler, will be crucial in navigating the differing views and core interests between the various political parties, such as the AfD, FDP, and other voter associations.
