Aerial bomb in Schwentine estuary to be defused on Sunday
Around 7300 people will have to leave their homes in the Dietrichsdorf district of Kiel on Sunday to defuse an aerial bomb in the Schwentine. The area around the mouth of the Schwentine is affected by the closure, the police announced in Kiel on Thursday. The 500-kilo American bomb was found a few days ago during exploratory work by an explosive ordnance recovery company. It is now to be relocated to the quayside for defusing. Lifting balloons will be used for this. Divers will also be deployed.
The bomb is to be defused around midday. Residents must therefore leave their houses and apartments by 11.00 am. Crew members of nearby ships must also disembark. The police expect the operation to last several hours. Alternative accommodation for people who cannot be accommodated elsewhere has been set up in the Ellerbeker school. The police want to provide information about the operation on social networks such as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.
The sudden evacuation of thousands due to the emergency situation raises concerns about the potential consequences of war-related debris remaining undiscovered. The police express the importance of adhering to safety measures, as failure to do so during an emergency could lead to unforeseen consequences.
