Radical Left-wing Groups Utilize Controversial Pro-Palestine Camp at Moorweide
Based on information from the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution, radical left-wing groups are utilizing the controversial Pro-Palestine camp at Moorweide for their purposes. Several organizations from the German and Turkish far-left have reportedly supported the ongoing vigil, according to Marco Haase, the spokesperson for the state office, as per the German Press Agency.
Groups such as the Turkish far-left extremist organization, Young Struggle, the brutal and anti-imperialist Red Construction Hamburg, along with subgroups of the Red Construction, are among those utilizing the camp, mentioned Haase. The camp serves as a stage for other extremist groups such as the Red Aid and the Communist Organization, he added. All of these groups are listed as extremist in the Office for the Protection of the Constitution's report.
Radical Left-wing Groups Leverage Protest Camp as a Platform
"In the camp, these groups can conduct lectures, hand out flyers and brochures, and generate content for their social media accounts," Haase stated. Anti-Israel clothing with the phrase "Boycott, Divest, Sanction" is also available and worn in the camp, which can be interpreted as a nod to the similarly anti-Semitic BDS campaign, he added.
The vigil, which is titled "Hands off Rafah," was established in response to Israel's military action in Gaza following the Hamas's terrorist attack. Demands for Israel's disarmament are among its objectives. It has been present on Theodor-Heuss-Platz, opposite Dammtor station, since May 6th. The registered organizer is a private individual, as per police records.
Radical Left-wing Camp Divided on Middle East Conflict
According to the report from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Hamburg published at the end of last year, there were 1,060 individuals affiliated with the far-left scene. Over three-quarters of them are classified as violence-oriented. The largest violence-oriented group is based around the cultural center Rote Flora with 550 individuals. In the anti-imperialist spectrum, 110 individuals are considered violent, including Red Construction Hamburg with about 60 followers. Both camps have their differences.
"The Hamas terrorist attack on Israel and the renewed Middle East conflict have revealed the deep divide within the far-left scene, which has been present for decades," Haase said. This time, however, the divide has become more apparent than ever before. "In the past, there have been occasional clashes between these groups, although they were mostly minor and not publically noticeable," he added.
The rivalry was plainly evident during the Red Construction's 1st of May demo this year, where a banner read "Rote" Flora - Shut Up" with "Rote" in quotation marks. Anti-imperialists briefly occupied the Rote Flora due to Hamas's support for Israel and "all people in Israel and all Jews worldwide," emphasizing "Killing Jews is not fighting for freedom!"
The pro-Israel stance of the autonomists is attributed to their belief that Hamas's attacks on Israel are driven by anti-Semitic motives, and not primarily by territorial or other reasons, Haase stated. On the other hand, the anti-imperialists solely promote pro-Palestinian positions, "and in a confrontational manner."
Organizer of the Vigil Detained for Aggressive Behavior
There was chaos at the camp over the weekend, as indicated by a police intervention that resulted in the temporary detainment of three participants, including the vigil organizer. Prior to this, protesters had been aggressive towards police officers, resulting in a policewoman sustaining minor injuries.
Subsequently, criminal charges were filed for resisting arrest, attempting to escape, assault, and causing bodily harm.
The future of the vigil is under review.
The vigil was last confirmed by the assembly authority until the end of August. A ban can only be imposed based on the provisions of assembly law – there is no legal provision for a time limit.
"The right to assembly, guaranteed in Article 8 of the Basic Law, is considered a cornerstone of our democracy according to the highest court rulings," said police spokesman Florian Abbenseth to dpa. Assemblies can only be restricted or prohibited under exceptional circumstances, such as when "life or limb, or/and property of particular value, is endangered."
Therefore, the assembly authority's hands are tied. It reviews the legality of the gathering on a monthly basis. So far, conditions have been imposed, although some have been overturned in court.
Whether the incidents from the weekend will impact the vigil's extension remains to be seen. Following the police intervention, calls for the immediate closure of the camp grew louder from politics.
Police Monitoring Protest Activities
Given the volatile situation at the Pro-Palestine camp and the aggressive behavior of some participants, police are closely monitoring activities in the area to maintain order and ensure public safety.
Police Involvement in Crowd Control at the Camp
In response to aggressive protests towards police officers and incidents of violence, the police have been involved in crowd control at the camp, working to deescalate tensions and maintain peace among the various radical left-wing groups.
