Soccer - Adler on Heuer Fernandes: "Mistakes part of the job"
Daniel Heuer Fernandes has received encouragement from one of his predecessors in the HSV goal after his unbelievable own goal in the Hamburg city derby at FC St. Pauli. "Mistakes are part of a goalkeeper's job. The important thing is how you deal with them," said former national team player René Adler (38) at a DFB event in Hamburg on Saturday ahead of the European Championship draw. "Ferro is experienced enough to deal with it." Adler played for HSV from 2012 to 2017.
On Friday evening, 31-year-old Heuer Fernandes scored what was probably the most curious own goal in the long history of the derby. The scene took place in the 27th minute of the second division match at the Millerntor Stadium. At the time, FC St. Pauli were 1:0 in front thanks to Jackson Irvine's goal (15th).
The visitors took a short kick via Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos. After Ramos passed to Heuer Fernandes, the ball bounced just in front of goal. The goalkeeper tried to clear the ball from the penalty area - but the ball flew into his own net. The fact that he and his team still managed to draw 2-2 with the league leaders despite trailing 2-0 at half-time helped him to overcome his frustration.
"Of course that's extremely unfortunate. I imagined it would be different. But that happens in soccer," said Heuer Fernandes after his first own goal in his 180th second division match. "It was a normal build-up play, as we often do," he reported. "I want to shoot the ball off the line, then the ball bounces and I shoot it into the goal."
He also received support from his team. "I can't count how many times he's saved our asses. So it's not an issue at all," said goalscorer Robert Glatzel. The HSV fans celebrated the usually reliable goalkeeper after the final whistle anyway. "Of course it's nice to hear," said Heuer Fernandes. "That's part of it. It's an interplay between the fans and the team."
