ADAC Warns: Avoid Driving to the European Championship Game at Volksparkstadion

The Senate aims for improved mobility during the first European Championship match in Hamburg, where parking spaces will likely be scarce near the Volksparkstadion. The ADAC warns, "When the ball is in play, traffic comes to a standstill."

Football fans are advised against using their cars for the opening match of the European Championship in Hamburg, as there are no available parking spaces near the Volksparkstadion, the club representatives stated on Tuesday. Fans will only have access to 8,000 parking spaces on the shuttle lots outside the city. Predictions indicate that about 49,000 people will be attending the game between Poland and the Netherlands on Sunday beginning at 3 p.m. "To attend this game, fans can only use fan buses or public transport, as there is likely to be congestion that day," remarked Christoph Tietgen from the ADAC.

For those travelling by bus or train, adequate time should be reserved for the journey, as there is likely to be massive crowds. Additionally, it may get congested around Heiligengeistfeld, where a public viewing for tens of thousands of people has been planned. Also, after the games, celebratory car convoys could potentially add to the congestion on the roads.

The mobility plan introduced by the red-green Senate for the European Championship has been embroiled in backlash from the CDU opposition. Critics argue that providing no parking spaces for spectators at the Volksparkstadion throughout the tournament and insisting on transportation via buses and trains represents an "alien" approach. In response, Tietgen noted, "Once the match begins, traffic in the city will come to a standstill." It remains to be observed if motorists will embrace this strategy and transfer to different modes of transport.
