Traffic - ADAC: Traffic jams on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning
The ADAC expects traffic jams on many highways and the routes to the winter holiday resorts in the Alpine countries before the Christmas weekend. Most traffic jams are likely to occur on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, the automobile club predicted in Munich on Monday.
In Germany, the "most important traffic jams" will be on the highways around the major cities of Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich. The ADAC also expects traffic jams on the A1 Cologne-Hamburg, the A2 Dortmund-Berlin and on the southbound highways such as the A7 and A8.
According to the ADAC, traffic on the other side of the German border will be particularly heavy on the main roads to the winter sports resorts - in Austria on the Tauern, Inntal and Brenner freeways, in Switzerland on the Gotthard route and the access roads to the ski resorts in Graubünden, the Bernese Oberland, Valais and central Switzerland. Traffic jams are also to be expected in South Tyrol and the Dolomites.
For the 24th and Christmas Day, the ADAC expects traffic to be rather quiet, before traffic becomes busier again from Boxing Day.
