ADAC: Refueling off the highway almost 40 cents cheaper

It's usually much cheaper to fill up after the next highway exit. A recent random sample by the ADAC confirms the old driver's wisdom. One tank of gas can quickly add up to 20 euros.

Motorists filling up at service stations on highways during the upcoming summer travel season often encounter high fuel prices, according to an ADAC survey. The automobile club found an average price difference of 39 cents for Super E10 gasoline and 38 cents for Diesel when comparing prices at highway service stations with their counterparts just beyond the respective exits. In the top 40 pairs of service stations surveyed along major highways, the ADAC found price differences of 54 cents for gasoline and 50 cents for Diesel. This difference was lower than it had been a year ago, when the highest difference reached 70 cents. The average differences were similar to those a year ago, with 42 cents for gasoline and 36 cents for Diesel.

"The phenomenon of gas stations charging disproportionately high fuel prices has been a problem for a long time," criticizes Stefan Gerwens, head of the traffic department at the ADAC. "From the ADAC's perspective, such high markups are not justifiable." He advises motorists to get off the highway. A short detour is usually worth it, according to the traffic club.

Recently, fuel prices have risen slightly after a prolonged decline. This coincides roughly with the start of the summer travel season in the first federal states, but it is likely a coincidence. The fact that Diesel, which is much more frequently purchased by commercial customers than gasoline, has also risen in price supports this theory.

Additionally, the ADAC recommends filling up in the evening, as both fuels are usually cheaper then. Motorists traveling abroad should also consider fuel prices at their destination, as data from the EU Commission shows. Fuels are generally much cheaper in the east and southeast of Germany than they are here.

  1. Motorists planning a trip to Munich from other parts of Germany might find significant price differences for E10 fuel on the freeway, as outlined in the ADAC's price comparison report.
  2. Stefan Gerwens, head of the traffic department at ADAC, suggests that motorists considering a short detour off the freeway can often find more affordable prices for refueling their cars.
  3. During the summer travel season, average price differences for Super E10 gasoline and Diesel between service stations on the freeway and those just beyond the exits in Germany are approximately 39 cents and 38 cents, respectively, according to ADAC's survey.
  4. Travelers venturing abroad from Munich should monitor fuel prices at their destination, as data from the EU Commission reveals that fuels are generally more affordable in the east and southeast regions of Germany compared to other parts of the country.
  5. In a recent survey, the ADAC found that filling up in the evening can lead to lower fuel prices, with an average difference of about 42 cents for gasoline and 36 cents for Diesel compared to refueling during the day.
