Theater - Actor Oliver Masucci slips into the role of Snape

If you are a fan of actor Oliver Masucci and the story of the famous sorcerer's apprentice Harry Potter, you can look forward to a short guest appearance by the 55-year-old in Hamburg. In February, Masucci will take on the role of Hogwarts teacher Severus Snape for ten performances in the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child". After around seven years and a lot of filming time, the Stuttgart-born actor will be back on a theater stage for the first time in a long time. "I am excited. This is my comeback to the stage. I'm doing it here," Masucci, who played at the Hamburg Schauspielhaus for several years as a beginner, told the German Press Agency in Hamburg. The first date is February 29, 2024.

When deciding on a guest performance at the Mehr! theater at the Grossmarkt, the role of Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore was initially also on the shortlist. But he decided against it for very pragmatic reasons: "Then you'd have such a huge beard and no one would have recognized you," said Masucci with a laugh. What's more, the role of Snape is simply good. "I loved and hated him in the films, too."

Masucci himself has been a Harry Potter fan for years: "I've read all the books, I've read them to my children, I've become part of it myself." He has also seen the play"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" twice. "So I can do this here with a clear conscience and be happy to be part of it." Masucci recently starred alongside Mads Mikkelsen, Jude Law and Eddie Redmayne in the fantasy film "Fantastic Beasts 3: Dumbledore's Secrets".

He is also most looking forward to being able to look behind the scenes of the play with all its magic. "Finding out all the tricks of how it's done. This stage is very, very complex. It's great that I can be behind the scenes, so to speak. It's like watching David Copperfield from behind the scenes."

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", which revolves around the adult sorcerer's apprentice Harry Potter and his son, has also been performed in Hamburg since December 2021. It was initially staged as a five-hour play, but is now a compact production of normal play length. The work penned by J. K. Rowling and others has already cast a magical spell over more than 700,000 visitors in Hamburg.
