Movie - Actor Guy Marchand dies
French actor and singer Guy Marchand, who was best known in Germany for his title role in "The Man from Suez", has died. The artist died at the age of 86 on Friday, his children told the French news agency AFP. In 1983, he played Ferdinand de Lesseps, the builder of the Suez Canal (shipping route between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea), in the Advent multi-part series "Man of Suez", which was broadcast by ZDF.
Marchand had his first major role in 1971 alongside Brigitte Bardot and Lino Ventura in "The Rum Road" by Robert Enrico (original title: Boulevard du Rhum). Other films followed, such as "A Beautiful Girl Like Me" by François Truffaut and "Cousin, Cousin" by Jean-Charles Tacchella. In "The Interrogation" by Claude Miller, for example, he appeared alongside Romy Schneider. For his role in the thriller, he won the César for Best Supporting Actor in 1982.
Before the artist, who was born in Paris on May 22, 1937, came to film, he made a name for himself as a musician. The singer and clarinettist released several records and became known in France as a crooner.
