Frankfurt - Activists still on the roof of occupied print shop

The occupation of the former Dondorf printing works in Frankfurt's Bockenheim district continues. After the police evacuated the interior on Thursday, a special task force (SEK) intervened on Friday, as confirmed by a police spokesperson. This had been part of the planning from the beginning and was not due to a current situation. According to the police, nine activists were still on the roof. The operation was ended in the late afternoon due to darkness. In the evening, talks were to take place between the activists and Goethe University, which has the right of domicile.

In the course of the operation, two activists left the roof with the help of a turntable ladder from the Frankfurt fire department. Two squatters had left the roof the night before, a third person in the morning. The police recorded their identities for the investigation.

"Our assessment is that the police are letting the people up there freeze and starve until they have to come down," said a spokeswoman for the collective on Friday morning. According to her, there were still 12 people on the roof. According to earlier police reports, the officers refrained from evacuating the roof for safety reasons.

The collective "Die Druckerei" has been occupying the former Dondorf printing works in Frankfurt's Bockenheim district for the second time this year since last weekend. The activists rejected a call by Goethe University for a voluntary eviction by Wednesday afternoon.

They are demanding the preservation of the building as an industrial and cultural monument. It is to be demolished to make way for a new building for the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. The building, which belongs to the state of Hesse, last housed the Institute for Art Education at Goethe University.
