Acquittals in trial over allegations of police violence in Cologne

However, one police officer was reportedly found guilty of breaching official secrets as charged. The officer received a fine of 2800 euros. The decision was made under reserve.

According to the indictment, the officers had been called to a traffic offense in Cologne in April 2021. The public prosecutor accused the officers of knocking the man to the ground during the operation and kicking and punching him without justification.

After the incident, the man was initially injured and taken to hospital by ambulance, where he left the same day after receiving outpatient treatment. In June 2021, the 59-year-old, who was not involved in the accident, reportedly died in hospital. The prosecution did not establish a connection between the death and the previous assault.
