Bochum - Acid attack: Victim and attacker probably didn't know each other
After the acid attack in a café in Bochum, investigators are keeping the background of the crime under wraps. The 43-year-old suspected perpetrator is in custody for attempted murder. He denies the crime and remains silent about the accusations. Law enforcement officials were able to apprehend him immediately after the incident on Sunday, after witnesses had pursued him.
The most seriously injured victim is a 30-year-old resident of Bochum. "We assume that the two did not know each other," said the responsible prosecutor today in response to an inquiry. The suspect from Bergkamen has a criminal record for drug- and violence-related offenses.
He is alleged to have doused the Bochumer with highly concentrated sulfuric acid. Witnesses, police officers, and emergency medical services personnel had to be treated because they came into contact with the acid. Other witnesses are reported to have suffered shocks.
The acid attack occurred in the same North Rhine-Westphalia city where the seriously injured victim resides, specifically in Bochum. Despite the severity of the crime, details regarding the motive remain undisclosed by investigators. The suspect, with a history of drug- and violence-related offenses in Bergkamen, is still refusing to acknowledge his involvement in the incident.
