Suspected Syrian Fighter for Radical Islamic Groups

Following allegations of him participating in the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, as well as other radical Islamic organizations, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Stuttgart has brought charges against a 35-year-old Syrian man. This individual was detained in Isny, the Allgäu region of Baden-Württemberg, in April.

The prosecution alleges that between mid-2012 and the conclusion of 2016, this man fought for a radical Islamic group in his native country. He is further accused of collaborating closely with local IS leadership. The Higher Regional Court in Stuttgart must now assess the admissibility of this accusation.

Long-Term Militant Involvement

The arrested man is also suspected of being an active member of another radical Islamic terrorist organization, Katibat Abu Bakr al-Siddik. The indictment claims that during this period, he served as a sniper and fighter in at least four battles at a military airport in the Dair as-Saur region from July 2012 to mid-2014. Moreover, he is said to have functioned as the right-hand man to Katibat Abu Bakr al-Siddik's leader.

At a later stage, the man became an associate of the local IS representative, serving in this capacity until mid-2015. Additionally, he is accused of participating as a fighter in the terrorist militia's activities in Aleppo and working at an IS war booty center.

Previously, it had been reported that the man had fled to Germany via Turkey and Greece at the end of 2016. However, there is no evidence indicating that he intended to commit any crimes in Germany.

During its peak, between 2014 and 2015, the IS militia controlled large swathes of war-torn Syria and bordering Iraq, proclaiming its own caliphate in the process. Following their territorial losses, the extremists continue to operate as active cells. IS took responsibility for the knife attack in Solingen, for instance.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Stuttgart has charged the man, stating that he 'is' an active member of Katibat Abu Bakr al-Siddik. During his time with this radical Islamic terrorist organization, the man 'is' accused of serving as a sniper and fighter in several battles.
