County of Rostock - Accommodation for refugees causes turbulence

A final decision on the temporary rental of refugee accommodation on the site of Karls Erdbeerhof in Rövershagen is still pending. The District Administrator of Rostock, Sebastian Constien (SPD), still has to wait for approval from the district council. The meeting of the district council was canceled on Tuesday evening. As a result, a corresponding draft resolution was not even put to the vote, as the district administration announced on Wednesday.

The district parliament had fallen out over the use of shared accommodation in the former mother and child clinic "Schwarzheide" in Graal-Müritz, whereupon several members ultimately left the meeting, thus breaking the quorum of the committee. The extension had previously been rejected after heated debate. The district administration intends to provide information on the next steps in the course of Wednesday.

In November, Constien had agreed to rent winter-proof accommodation at Karls Erdbeerhof from November 15 to April 14, 2024 as part of his urgent decision-making powers. The costs for the six-month contract period amount to 1.2 million euros, which will be covered by the state. It remains to be seen when the district council, which actually had its last meeting of the year on Tuesday, will make a decision on this issue.

It was only on Monday that the majority of the Bützow town council voted against leasing or selling municipal land to the Rostock district to accommodate refugees. The issue was also the subject of a referendum in November, but this failed due to a missed quorum. In Bützow, the district wants to stick to its plans for shared accommodation. In October, the district announced that it was expecting a further 450 refugees by the end of the year.
