DFB Cup - Accolade for Reese: "Best player in the 2nd division"

After his gala performance in the dramatic cup win against Hamburger SV, Hertha winger Fabian Reese received the highest praise from captain Toni Leistner. "He definitely identifies extremely strongly with this club. We can always use him, his power, his speed, his assists. He's the best player in the second division and we're happy to have him in the team," said Leistner after Hertha BSC's 5-3 victory in the penalty shoot-out of the DFB Cup round of 16.

The praised player himself was modest. "It's an accolade, I feel honored and have to be careful not to blush. That's for others to judge," said the 25-year-old Reese, carrying the match ball under his arm, which is usually awarded for a treble.

Reese had scored two goals in the match. "With the penalty, it was three," he said with a laugh. That's because he had also converted the decisive penalty and set up Jonjoe Kenny's 3:3. "I'll tell my children about that one day. A gigantic evening. Something very special happened in the team today," said Reese.

In sporting terms, Hertha have reached the quarter-finals of the cup for the first time since 2016. But the win is also important financially for the struggling second division club. They will receive €1,724,800 for reaching the last eight - and possibly a lucrative home game on top of that.
