Winter weather - Accidents on slippery roads: Police urge caution

Snowfall caused slippery roads and accidents in Western Pomerania on Wednesday. Several drivers lost control of their cars and skidded, according to the police. Near Ueckermünde (Vorpommern-Greifswald district), a car slid into a tree while turning, according to the police. Both occupants were injured in the collision, the 63-year-old driver seriously.

In Greifswald, a bus skidded into a tree and then took a fence and a lamppost with it. The 52-year-old driver and a 20-year-old female passenger were uninjured, but the damage to property was estimated at 370,000 euros.

The police warned drivers to adapt to the wintry road and weather conditions. Increased attention and appropriate speeds are required.

The German Weather Service (DWD) is reporting up to five centimetres of fresh snow in the north over the course of Wednesday with maximum temperatures between one and three degrees. According to the DWD, there will be rain, sleet and snow in the coming days. There is still a local risk of slippery conditions on the frozen ground.
