Accidents in many places - milder weather brings relief

The winter weather has caused accidents and traffic disruptions. Sliding cars, gridlocked traffic on the roads and broken down buses were the result. With the milder weather, the situation is calming down.

Black ice - Accidents in many places - milder weather brings relief

Numerous accidents occurred in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland on Monday in wintry weather with snow and icy conditions. There were also some restrictions on public transport. On Tuesday, the situation eased somewhat as the weather became milder.

The situation on the roads

In many places on Monday, cars, vans and trucks skidded, skidded off the road or slid into other vehicles. According to the police, most of the damage was minor. The police headquarters in Mainz counted around 180 accidents on Monday, in eight cases people were injured. Several people were injured in a pile-up on the winter-slippery Autobahn 60 on Monday evening. The road was temporarily closed.

In the Vorder- and Südpfalz region, the police counted 43 weather-related accidents with four minor injuries. According to a spokesperson for the Koblenz police, there were various minor accidents typical of winter. However, the traffic situation eased considerably in most parts of the state during the night to Tuesday, with no major incidents according to the police.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

In some places, there were severe restrictions on bus services on Monday, for example in high-altitude areas of Saarland, in the Rhine-Lahn district, in the Westerwald district and in Neuwied. In the districts of Mainz-Bingen and in the city and district of Bad Kreuznach, KRN bus services were completely suspended; on Tuesday, services were back on schedule. In Mainz, there were reportedly only restrictions on one bus route on Tuesday.

The weather outlook

The German Weather Service (DWD) expects milder temperatures in the coming days. On Wednesday, it is expected to rain lightly at times, with sleet in places. Highs will be between zero degrees in the Westerwald and five degrees on the Moselle. There is a risk of slippery conditions in places at night. On Thursday, it should remain mostly dry with a maximum of one to four degrees. At night and on Friday, there could be black ice again in places. Temperatures are then expected to reach a maximum of three to seven degrees.
