Accidents caused by slippery roads and snow - no major chaos
Winter continues to have Germany in its grip: snow and black ice on the roads caused a number of accidents on Tuesday evening. However, there was no major chaos for the time being. However, caution is still advised on the roads. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued an official icy weather warning for most of Germany, which is valid until 11.00 am. It is expected to remain wintry until at least the weekend.
Due to black ice, there were two pile-ups in Middle Franconia in Bavaria on Tuesday evening. Eight people were injured, two of them seriously, as the police reported during the night. A 35-year-old driver lost control on a snow-covered road near Heilsbronn (Ansbach district) due to inappropriate speed and collided with four cars. Shortly afterwards, there was a collision involving ten cars on a bridge near Gunzenhausen (Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district).
In Leipzig in Saxony, four cars and an ambulance slid into each other on a slippery road on Tuesday evening. According to the police, five people were slightly injured. According to initial information, the ambulance was traveling with its blue lights on. One car swerved as it braked. As a result, the other cars collided with each other.
Weather-related accidents
There were also weather-related accidents in Lower Saxony. For example, a car skidded into a tree on a snow-covered road near Bassum in the district of Diepholz. A 29-year-old passenger was seriously injured and the 26-year-old driver was slightly injured. There was snow in many parts of the north during the night. However, there were no major restrictions at first.
"Even though there is a little snow here in Bremen, we don't have any traffic chaos on the roads yet," said a spokeswoman for the situation center during the night. In Schleswig-Holstein, too, the snow has not yet led to any significant accidents or disruptions, according to the situation center there.
In Thuringia, despite the "tense snow situation" in some places, accidents were normal, according to the situation center. "The weather situation has calmed down and the icy conditions have eased," said a spokesperson for the situation center in Saxony. At the situation center in Brandenburg, a spokesperson did not expect possible accidents due to the weather conditions until the morning hours.
The situation is easing in western Hesse
In western Hesse, which was particularly affected by the snowfall at the beginning of the week, the situation eased. Almost all closed roads have been reopened. "It has normalized, everywhere has been and is being gritted. But it's still going to be slippery, so we'll see what happens," said a spokeswoman for the West Hesse police headquarters.
A meteorologist from the DWD said in the morning: "It remains wintry across the board and there is relatively widespread snow." Today there will be occasional snowfall in some regions. "But the big amounts will come at the weekend," said the weather expert. Then it will also get colder again. Due to permafrost in many regions, icy conditions are still possible.
Given the current weather conditions in Central France, drivers should be extra cautious on the roads due to potential slippery conditions. Yesterday, there were several traffic accidents reported in Gunzenhausen, a district in Bavaria, Germany, which is not typically known for such incidents.
