Internal security - Abstract danger of attacks on Christmas markets

Thuringia's CDU interior politician Raymond Walk has drawn attention to the abstract danger of Islamist attacks on Christmas markets. Walk told the German Press Agency in Erfurt that the threat level remains abstractly high. There are currently no signs of a concrete planned attack in Thuringia. "However, the recently foiled attacks on Christmas markets in Leverkusen and Hanover show just how real the danger is," said Walk.

Thuringia's Secretary of State for the Interior, Udo Götze, outlined the consequences of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel for the security situation in Thuringia in the state parliament. He said that the Advent and Christmas period was particularly important from a threat perspective.

Christmas markets are particularly relevant - due to the "high number of visitors, the mostly central location and open access opportunities". However, the security authorities currently have no evidence to suggest a specific threat to Christmas markets.

According to Goetze, however, Christmas markets in Thuringia are the focus of police attention. In Erfurt, for example, a temporary police station had been set up. The police are also showing a stronger presence at other Christmas markets. From his point of view, however, there is no reason not to visit a Christmas market.

Walk thinks it is right "that the Thuringian Christmas markets are actively patrolled by the police". Christmas markets traditionally run during the Advent season until shortly before Christmas Eve. In the state capital of Erfurt, for example, the large Christmas market on Domplatz is open until December 22.
