About 2500 people at pro-Palestinian demonstrations
According to police estimates, a total of around 2,500 people took part in two pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Berlin on Saturday. According to a police spokesperson, around 2,000 people took part in a march entitled "Stop the genocide in Gaza" through Wedding, Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte alone.
There had been isolated criminal statements made verbally or on posters. In addition, illegal songs were played on a loudspeaker van, a spokesperson said in the evening. The float was subsequently excluded from the march. Criminal proceedings were initiated against 17 people, including for incitement to hatred and public incitement to commit crimes.
A second demonstration entitled "Solidarity with Palestine" from Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg to Puschkinallee passed off without incident, according to the spokesperson. There, the police estimated the number of participants at 430. The organizers of the march had registered 3,000 people.
The background to the demonstrations is the Gaza war. Since the bloody attack on Israel by the terrorist organization Hamas on 7 October and the Israeli counter-offensive, there have been repeated expressions of solidarity with one side or the other of the conflict in Berlin.
