- About 100 liters of acid leaked in a dairy factory basement
An acid spill in the basement of a dairy in Zapfendorf has resulted in three employees suffering minor injuries. Around 100 liters of nitric acid leaked from a tank in the basement early in the morning, according to police. Around 150 emergency service personnel from the fire department and rescue services were dispatched to the scene in the district of Bamberg. The emergency services diluted the acid with water and disposed of it in the dairy's sewage treatment plant, the police reported.
The leaked acid and resulting gases posed no threat to the population, police stated. A spokesperson initially attributed the incident to a technical malfunction.
The rescue services transported the three injured employees to a hospital. Initially, police reported two people with minor injuries. The acid spill was reported to the control center by employees on site. The extent of the damage was initially unclear.
The cleaning crew needed to wear protective gear due to the lingering acid fumes. To prevent future accidents, the dairy plans to upgrade its acid storage tank's safety mechanisms.
