Traffic - A93 fully closed due to fawns next to roadway

The Autobahn 93 was temporarily closed in both directions on a Monday evening near Schwandorf due to a Rehdeer fawn spotted near the roadside. The police reported that there was a concern that more young animals might run onto the street from the shrubs beside the Autobahn.

Two drones with thermal imaging cameras were able to locate several animals. The rescue team of the fire department found that the Rehdeer fawns had entered the area of the Autobahn through torn sections of a wildlife fence. The damaged sections were repaired, and the Autobahn was reopened afterwards.

Similar incidents occurred over the weekend

Last weekend, Rehdeer fawns were repeatedly observed inside the wildlife fence next to the A93. The fire department had already detected and repaired a hole in the fence, which had apparently been deliberately cut.

The police believe that the animals were likely searching for their mother, who had been killed by a wild animal accident on the Autobahn a few days earlier.

  1. On the following weekend, the local authorities in OBERPFALZ, Bavaria, were prepared for potential traffic disruptions due to the recurring presence of fawns near the A93.
  2. The traffic on the Autobahn 93 in Schwandorf was monitored closely by the police and the fire department on that weekend, with an increased focus on the roadside and the nearby shrubs.
  3. During that weekend, the local fire department received reports of cattle wandering onto the A93, adding to the existing concerns about animal safety along the Autobahn.
  4. As a precaution, the police and fire department arranged for a team with a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera to continuously survey the roadway and its surroundings to prevent any potential accidents involving animals.
  5. Fresh reports of fawns spotted near the A93 in Schwandorf during the weekend prompted the fire department to repair additional damaged sections of the wildlife fence, ensuring the safety of both animals and motorists.
