A40 bridge near Duisburg is opened
After less than four years of construction, the new bridge over the Autobahn 40 near Duisburg will be opened at 05:00 on Monday. This was announced by the public road construction company Deges and the federal highway company. Most recently, there had been a ten-day full closure between the Duisburg and Duisburg-Rheinhausen interchanges due to final work on the bridge.
In future, traffic will flow over the new bridge with three lanes in each direction. Heavy goods vehicles will also be allowed to pass again. The dilapidated old A40 Neuenkamp bridge could not be used by heavily laden trucks for safety reasons. Weighing systems on the bridge had caused massive delays and obstructions for years.
According to Deges, the bridge between the Ruhr region and the Lower Rhine and the Netherlands is used by more than 100,000 vehicles on average every day. The first half of the bridge structure has now been completed, with the second half due to follow by 2026.
The opening of the new A40 bridge near Duisburg, after four years of construction, will significantly reduce traffic congestion due to the closure of the old bridge. With the new bridge's opening, heavy goods vehicles will no longer face restrictions, easing traffic flow and addressing safety concerns.
