A14 section over Mittelland Canal goes under construction

The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the next section of the A14 north of Magdeburg took place in a thin blanket of snow and icy wind. Around 200 million euros will be spent on the eleven kilometers of road.

Börde - A14 section over Mittelland Canal goes under construction

The next stage in the construction of the A14 northern extension from Magdeburg towards the Baltic Sea: the ground-breaking ceremony for the 11.5-kilometre section from the Dahlenwarsleben junction to Wolmirstedt took place on Monday. "With this section, which connects the state capital directly to the northbound section that is already under traffic, the construction of the highway is making good progress once again," explained Saxony-Anhalt's Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs, Lydia Hüskens.

"We are delighted that the overall completion of the A14 in Saxony-Anhalt is becoming more and more tangible," said the FDP politician.

The section connects to the A14 Dresden - Magdeburg. It has a further junction on the B71 to connect to the district town of Haldensleben. The centerpiece is an almost 80-meter-long overpass of the Mittelland Canal. A total of eleven bridge structures, four overpasses of roads and paths, protective facilities for bats, noise barriers and walls are planned.

The right to build this section of the A14 has been in place since the end of 2020. A private individual's appeal against the planning approval decision was withdrawn in September 2021. Initially, amphibians and a hamster population south of the Mittelland Canal were mapped. As part of the construction preparations, archaeological investigations were carried out, cables were relocated and environmental and species protection measures were implemented.

Four years are planned for the actual road construction. With this section, all sections of a total of 97 kilometers of the A14 northern extension in Saxony-Anhalt will be under construction or in operation. Traffic is already flowing on almost 15 kilometers between the Wolmirstedt and Tangerhütte (near Dolle) junctions. The approximately 15-kilometer stretch from Dolle to Lüderitz is scheduled to be opened on December 14.

The A14 northern extension, or more precisely the gap closure between the Magdeburg and Schwerin interchanges, covers a total of 155 kilometers. Construction began in 2011 and the sections in Saxony-Anhalt are currently scheduled for completion by 2028. There is still no building permit for a section in Brandenburg.
