Heavy weather - A tornado passes through Munsterland - Concerts in Bavaria cancelled due to thunderstorms

Storms caused chaos in Southern Germany overnight from Friday to Saturday, leading to numerous interventions by Fire Department and Police forces in South Bavaria. No one was injured. According to a spokesperson, around 120 interventions were coordinated in the Integrated Control Center Oberland by 10:00 pm, with 30 of these occurring in the Landkreis Bad-Tölz-Wolfratshausen.

The interventions were reported to have gone smoothly by both the Fire Department and Police. On the A95 autobahn near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, aquaplaning caused an accident. At Ickinger Berg in the Oberbayerischer Landkreis Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, a piece of earth gave way and blocked a road. In Icking itself, the town center was reportedly flooded, with cars stuck in the water being rescued by the Fire Department.

The storm front passed through Southern Bavaria between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm. The storm had quickly passed, according to the Integrated Control Center Oberland. The German Weather Service had warned of storms with heavy rain and strong winds in the region.

Concerts in Munich and Regensburg cancelled

A police spokesperson in Kempten reported that the roads were white with hailstones. Between 6 pm and midnight on Friday, the Police reported approximately 320 weather-related interventions. The focus was in the areas of Ost- and Oberallgäu as well as the western part of the Landkreis Lindau. The follow-up interventions such as pumping out cellars were still ongoing into the night.

On Friday evening, there were approximately 230 interventions in the entire area of the Police Presidium Oberbayern Sud due to the storm. The spokesperson in Rosenheim reported that there were no major interventions. There were mainly flooded cellars and fallen trees blocking roads and railways. No injuries were reported.

The Open-Air Event "Klassik am Odeonsplatz" in Munich was prematurely cancelled due to the weather. Thousands of spectators had to leave their seats earlier than planned in the Munich city center. According to a spokesperson, the event had to be cancelled completely due to bad weather in its 23-year history. The premiere of the Regensburger Schlossfestspiele also fell victim to the rain. Just before the performance began, spectators had to leave the venue in the heavy rain.

Possible tornado sweeps through the Munsterland

Emergency services were called out further north in the Munsterland. Strong winds caused significant damage in Telgte east of Munster in a business park. According to the city, trees were uprooted and the B51 highway was closed. The population was warned to stay at home via social media. The Fire Department was in full force, according to the City Ordinance Office. Damage to buildings was extensive, a photovoltaic system was damaged by a roof. The Fire Department requested assistance from forces in the Kreis Warendorf and the Technical Relief Organization.

Media reported that there might have been a tornado. The WDR cited the manager of a container company. "My employees called me shortly before 4 p.m. and said that a tornado had passed through here." Tornadoliste.de had already classified the storm as a tornado. Damages were reported in and around Telgte in the Warendorf district, it was said.

An enthusiastic atmosphere reigned at a popular music festival on the airfield in Slovakian Trencin – until a thunderstorm hit. The weather destroyed the terrain of the open-air festival. The rescue services brought ten people to nearby hospitals, as the control room reported in the evening. They had sustained injuries to the head and upper limbs, among other things.

According to the TASR agency, a large tent was overturned by the storm's strong wind gusts, several smaller ones were uprooted or damaged. The program was interrupted. At times, the power had to be cut off on the terrain. Police, fire department, and rescue services were in full force.

The festival "Pohoda" (Merriment or Comfort) took place on the airfield of Trencin. Families with children were also present. An evacuation center for festivalgoers was set up in a sports hall. Whether the festival could continue on Saturday was still uncertain.

As early as Thursday in Slovakia, two people had lost their lives in a landslide in a mountain valley. In neighboring Czech Republic, thunderstorms with heavy rain caused problems. Uprooted trees disrupted the railway traffic at numerous locations.

In Krahulci near Telc in South Bohemia, the dam of a fish pond broke, cellars were flooded. In Brno (Brno), a motorcycle rider crashed into a tree on the road. At a camping site in Sudmeren, a man was injured when a tree fell on two cars and a tent.

The adverse weather conditions also affected other areas beyond South Bavaria. In the Munsterland, a possible tornado caused significant damage, requiring the assistance of the Fire Department and forces from the Kreis Warendorf and the Technical Relief Organization. trees were uprooted and the B51 highway was closed.
