A tornado in Kansas kills one person and causes multiple injuries.
Authorities were yet to inform the family of the storm victim, as relayed by spokesperson Becky Ryan to CNN in a phone conversation.
Westmoreland, with approximately 740 people, fell victim to a tornado at around 4:50 pm, as per National Weather Service.
Three individuals did not have to be hospitalized, as Ryan shared at her conference.
Pottawatomie County Sheriff Shane Jager reported, the tornado ravaged the northern part of the town.
22 houses were either destroyed or uninhabitable, with 13 other homes and one business sustaining damage, as per Ryan. Three RVs and some other structures were also completely wiped out, she added.
Offices in Pottawatomie County were also part of the destroyed structures.
A curfew was implemented starting at 9:30 pm, as notified in an official announcement.
Kansas Highway Patrol was aiding in the search efforts, they confirmed to CNN through an emailed release.
As part of the assistance, they have deployed several troopers to Westmoreland and other nearby areas. They're currently carrying out door-to-door rescue operations.
Electricity was down in the area, and efforts were underway to restore it, Ryan updated.
Westmoreland lies about 60 miles northwest of Topeka.
