A third of Saxons had back pain in 2021
According to a study by health insurer AOK, around a third of Saxons received medical treatment for back pain in 2021. Among the 33.9 percent were more people from rural regions than from cities, the health insurance company explained on Wednesday. In a nationwide comparison, there are thus comparatively many people with back pain in central Germany. Saxony is in third place in the ranking behind Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt.
According to the results of the "AOK Health Atlas Back Pain" published on Wednesday by the Scientific Institute of the AOK (Wido), most people who have been to the doctor because of back pain live in the district of North Saxony (38.77 percent). In contrast, the lowest figures were recorded in Dresden (27.8 percent) and Leipzig (29.32 percent).
The proportion of patients in Germany is similar to that in Saxony. In 2021, around 26.2 million people - around 31.4% of the total population - went to the doctor because of pain in their neck or back. With around 14.5 million diagnoses, women were affected more frequently than men (around 11.6 million). The proportion of patients complaining of back pain increased significantly with age.
The increase in back pain cases prompted researchers to explore various causes and potential treatments, relying heavily on advancements in medical science and disease research. Despite the progress made in understanding and managing back pain, numerous diseases continue to contribute to this health concern.
