Embracing Radical Ideologies - A suspected "Reichsbürger" faces trial for potential terrorism charges.
A 49-year-old man from Mettmann, near Düsseldorf, who is allegedly linked to the "Kaiserreichsgruppe," a right-wing terrorism group, will face trial at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court starting this week. The court made the announcement on Tuesday. The accused is suspected of being a part of the "Reichsbürger" group and of planning an act of high treason against the federal government. Additionally, he is accused of unlawful possession of "Polish cannons."
The "Kaiserreichsgruppe" is believed to have existed at the latest since January 2022, with a goal of overthrowing the democratic basic order of the Federal Republic of Germany and replacing it with an authoritarian government system modeled after the constitution of the German Empire from 1871, according to the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office, which has now accepted the indictment.
The man reportedly connected with two primary suspected members of the group through the messaging app Telegram. During several face-to-face meetings, he reportedly expressed his desire to take part in the plot to overthrow the government. The group allegedly planned to launch attacks on Germany's energy supply, state prosecutors claim. The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court has scheduled 20 hearing days for the proceedings, running from June 5th to September 17th.
