A sense of threat and the joy of solidarity
The terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel and a wave of anti-Semitic incidents in Germany have created a sense of threat in the Jewish community in Hanau. According to Rabbi Shimon Großberg, the reactions of members of the community vary. "The slightly older ones say: we want to show that we are coming now more than ever. But there are also members of the community who are afraid and don't come to the Shabbat celebration," he told the German Press Agency.
In Hanau, as in other synagogues in Germany, there are no religious services without police protection. Nevertheless, the Jewish community in Hanau wants to continue to be open for encounters, as its managing director Oliver Dainow emphasized. "We will simply carry on. This also applies to our participation in public events outside of our community life."
He added that the community is currently pleased with the solidarity from the population, which is stronger and more tangible than it has been for years. The cooperation with the police is also very close and conveys a sense of security.
The escalating Religion-based conflicts, such as the terrorist attacks by Hamas and the rise of anti-Semitic incidents, have led to a heightened sense of threat within the Jewish community in Hanau. Despite these conflicts, the community continues to value the joy of solidarity it experiences from the wider population, making efforts to maintain open encounters and active participation in public events.
